Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center. 

Tuesday, Oct. 1

Dentistry students to give Dental Grand Rounds presentation

​Taylor Bolland, D4, will present “Fabrication of a Maxillary Obturator in a Patient with an Oral-Antral Communication” and Stephen Greer, D4, will present “Diagnosis and Treatment of Vertical Root Factures," as part of Dental Grand Rounds at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Women's exec to discuss women's health investing

Tracy DeVries, Women's Foundation of Mississippi executive director, will give the UMMC Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the UMMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science's "inclUsive conversation," "Investing in Women's Health," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, in second-floor conference rooms C and D in the student union.

Family med faculty to unlock sleep, fatigue's performance impact

Dr. Molly S. Clark, associate professor of family medicine, will give the Department of Surgery Grand Rounds presentation, "The Impact of Sleep and Fatigue on Performance," from 8-9 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, in room CW 106 of the Classroom Wing.

Ob-Gyn faculty to cover placenta accreta spectrum

Dr. Rachael F. Morris, assistant professor of maternal fetal medicine in the UMMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, will give the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Grand Rounds presentation, "Placenta Accreta Spectrum," from 7-7:50 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Author to discuss peds oral health's impact in book talk, signing

​Sonja Lauren, author of The Covered Smile, will discuss her book, a tale about her childhood of abuse, neglect and the impact oral health has on a child's life, at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, in the student union.

Western U professor to focus on visuomotor control substrates

Dr. Brian D. Corneil, professor of physiology and pharmacology and professor of psychology at the Brain and Mind Institute, Western University, London, Ontario, Canada, will give the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomical Sciences Seminar Series presentation, "Responding When Time is of the Essence: Determining the Substrates for Fast Visuomotor Control," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, in classroom 3A (room N318 on the North Wing).

Tuesday, Oct. 15

Vice chancellor to speak at fall faculty meeting​

Dr. LouAnn Woodward, UMMC vice chancellor for health affairs, is scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting set for noon on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Woodward will provide an update for the Medical Center and faculty with 20 years of service will be recognized. Flu shots will be available before and after the meeting from Student and Employee Health. Lunch will be available on a first-come basis.

Biobank Mississippi to host precision medicine research initiative

Biobank Mississippi will host a "Precision Medicine Research Initiative" in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic to bring awareness and engagement about precision medicine from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, Oct. 16-17, in the Guyton Research Center breezeway.

Chief medical officer to record UMMC's quality journey

Dr. J. Michael Henderson, chief medical officer, will give the Department of Pathology Grand Rounds presentation, "UMMC Quality Journey," from 7-8 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16, in classroom R354.

Women at Risk founder to discuss health care's role in trafficking

​Rebecca McDonald, founder and president of Women at Risk International, will give the Division of Continuing Health Professional Education and School of Medicine Community Service Team presentation, "Health Care's Role in Sex Trafficking," from 1-5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the student union.

Collegiate scholars set to heat up RICE competition

Selected graduate students from diverse backgrounds in a range of academic disciplines will participate in the annual Rural Interdisciplinary Case Experience (RICE) Bowl, an interactive competition to provide the best solution for a realistic scenario about complex rural health issues from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in lecture hall 124 in the medical education building.

Sponsored by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities, the event will include participants from Jackson State University, Mississippi College, Mississippi State University, the University of Mississippi and UMMC. A reception will follow the competition.
